Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Oxford Instruments plc, a British manufacturing and research company, internationally renowned for precision instrument design and manufacturing, have decided to further strengthen their cooperative relationship, particularly in the development of innovative technologies.

ITRI Vice President Duann Jia-ruey and the Finance Director of Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology Adam Jaufurally signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation at a ceremony in Taipei on Wednesday, pledging to expand their cooperation to MEMS (microelectromechanical system), micro-LED, silicon photonics and the development of other semiconductor optoelectronic components and equipment technology.

Under the MOU, the England-based conglomerate will increase personnel at its R&D base at the ITRI, according to a statement issued by that body.

ITRI and Oxford Instruments first signed an MOU on cooperation in 2006, following which ITRI's MEMS Center and Oxford Instruments successfully developed HB (high brightness)-LED-related technology.

Speaking at the ceremony, Duann said that ITRI has abundant talent and capabilities in semiconductor and optoelectronics R&D, and its many research achievements are spread across upstream, midstream and downstream industrial chains, underpinning the vibrant development of related industries in Taiwan.

The expanding research focus under the latest agreement will not only help in the future development of traditional LED-related technology, but also concentrate on cooperation in emerging technologies and applications in the fields of micro-LED and silicon photonics, he noted.

"It is hoped the collaborative efforts will promote semiconductor technology applications here and expedite economic growth in Asian emerging markets," Duann said.

For his part, Jaufurally said Oxford Instruments is attracted to Taiwan due to its key leading technology and the comprehensive industrial chain within its semiconductor industry.

"ITRI plays an important role in technology R&D and therefore Oxford Instruments is interested in expanding its collaboration with ITRI and Taiwan industry," he said.

Oxford Instruments will jointly hold precision testing/analysis training courses with ITRI, making the institute an important base for Oxford Instruments in the Asia-Pacific in training engineering R&D personnel, he said.

Catherine Nettleton, representative of the British Office Taipei and Tim Tsai, an advisor at the Department of Industrial Technology under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, were also present at the ceremony to witness the signing of documents.
