Taipei, Aug. 14 (CNA) Taiwan's aviation police performed a counter-terrorism drill at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on Monday as part of a security upgrade in preparation for the 2017 Universiade, set to open later this week.

In the drill, 14 detection dogs were dispatched to help police identify luggage suspected of containing explosives, according to Huang Jung-ching, chief of the Aviation Police Bureau under the National Police Agency.

The dogs were all top performers selected from various parts of Taiwan, he said.

During the Universiade, the military police's special services unit will work with the aviation police's SWAT forces to patrol airports, according to the bureau.

The police will take rapid counter actions in the event of a terrorist attack, and in the case of a bomb threat, passengers will be evacuated and bomb experts called to the scene immediately to handle the situation, the bureau said.

The 2017 Universiade will be the largest-ever multi-sport event hosted in Taiwan.

A total of 11,397 delegates from 131 countries, including 7,639 athletes, are expected to attend the event, which runs from Aug. 19 to 30.
