Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) Taiwan on Friday scored a spectacular win against Argentina in the opening game of the women's football tournament at the Taipei Universiade, winning 3-0 in the first game of Group A matches.
Midfielder Chen Yen-ping put Taiwan ahead just three minutes in, firing home a shot past Argentine goalie Gabriela Nicole Garton.
The South American team then put pressure on Taiwan looking for an equalizer, but Taiwan's defense held strong and maintained the team's one-goal lead at halftime.
The Taiwanese again showed some deft touches in the second half. In the 55th minute, Lee Hsiu-chin scored a beautiful header on a pinpoint cross from striker Pao Hsin-hsuan, giving Taiwan a two-goal lead.
Just seven minutes later, Chen scored another goal for the hosts when she dribbled effortlessly past Argentine defender Lucia Alejandrina Roca and then fired a shot past Garton inside the far post.
In other first round matches in the women's tournament, in which 13 countries are competing, South Korea topped the United States 3-0 in the other Group A match.
In matches in other groups, Brazil trounced Colombia 17-0, the United Kingdom lost to South Africa 3-1, and Mexico and Ireland played to a scoreless draw.
The hosts next face the U.S. on Aug. 20.
In the men's tournament, in which 16 teams are competing, Italy topped the U.S. 2-0, Taiwan lost to Mexico 3-0, Russia topped Brazil 3-2, and Ireland and France played to a 0-0 draw in games Friday.
