UNIVERSIADE: Taiwan shares spoils with South Korea in roller sports

Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) Taiwan and South Korea nearly swept all the medals on offer on the first day of roller sports events at the Taipei Universiade on Monday, including splitting the day's four gold medals.

The South Koreans finished the day with gold medals in both the men's and women's 300-meter time trial.

Kim Jinyoung dominated the men's event in a time of 23.949 seconds, easily outpacing Kao Mao-chieh, whose time of 24.371 was good enough for silver ahead of bronze medalist Hong Seunggi (24.452) of South Korea.

Taiwanese Sung Ching-yang, who entered the race with high expectations, had the third best time after the first lap but stumbled when entering the final curve of the two-lap race to finish fifth in a time of 24.939.

The competition was far tighter in the women's division, with South Korean An Yiseul edging Chen Ying-chu by two-hundredths of a second. An finished in a time of 25.805 to Chen's 25.828.

Shin Soyeoung of South Korea, who set the world record of 25.702 for the event in Kaohsiung in 2015, edged Li Meng-chu of Taiwan for bronze by three-thousandths of second with a time of 26.570, edging Li's 26.573.

Earlier in the day, Taiwan's Yang Ho-chen, the world record holder in the event, and Li snatched the top two spots in the roller sports women's 10,000 meter points-elimination race.

Yu Garam of South Korea took bronze.

Chen Yan-cheng and Ko Fu-shiuan finished first and second in the roller sports men's 10,000m points-elimination final, with Colombian Carlos Perez Canaval taking bronze.
