Taipei, Aug. 21 (CNA) Taiwan's Kuo Hsing-chun broke a 10-year-old world record and defeated the defending Olympic champion in the women's weightlifting 58kg weight class to win a gold medal at the Taipei Universiade on Monday.

In what was expected to be a showdown between Kuo, who won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and Olympic titleholder Sukanya Srisurat of Thailand, the Taiwanese stole the show in front of her own crowd.

Kuo took the lead with a snatch of 107 kilograms and then, after having already clinched a gold medal, nailed a clean and jerk of 142 kg on her final lift of the night to break the world record of 141 kg set by Qiu Hongmei of China in April 2007.

Kuo's combined total of 249 kg was just three kilos short of the world record of 252 kg set by Boyanka Kostova of Azerbaijan in November 2015 and eclipsed her combined lift of 231 kg in Rio in 2016 when she was not at her best.

Srisurat had a combined lift of 240 kg to win Olympic gold in Brazil, but could only manage a snatch of 100 kg and a clean and jerk of 121 kg in Taipei on Monday to finish far behind Kuo at the Universiade.

Kim Chung Sim of North Korea won bronze with a combined lift of 217 kg.
