Taipei, Aug. 23 (CNA) Taiwan maintained its dominance of inline speed skating events at the 2017 Taipei Universiade on Wednesday when it racked up three more gold medals and threw in a bronze for good measure.

Chen Ying-chu started the run with gold in the women's 500m sprint final, squeaking past Maria Timms Ariza of Colombia by about six-hundredths of a second. Yang Ho-chen, who won two golds a day earlier, grabbed bronze.

Taiwan then won both the men's and women's 3000m relays over South Korea.

The men's team, consisting of Kao Mao-chieh, Sung Ching-yang, and Chen Yan-cheng , needed a late sprint at the end to edge past the Koreans in a time of 4 minutes, 4.432 seconds.

Korea notched silver in 4:04.447 and Colombia took bronze in 4:04.512 in a race that was tightly contested throughout.

The Taiwanese women's team of Chen Ying-chu, Li Meng-chu, and Yang Ho-chen broke away from their Korean rivals in the final two laps to win gold more comfortably than the men, posting a time of 4:25.026.

But as with the men's relay, South Korea finished second (4:25.565) and Colombia was third (4:28.157) in the women's race.

The day actually began inauspiciously for the hosts when Huang Yu-lin, one of the favorites in the men's 500m sprint after taking gold in the 1000m sprint on Tuesday, was disqualified in a semifinal heat for illegal contact with one of the other skaters.

Hong Seung-gi of South Korea took advantage of Huang's absence to win the final in a near world-record time of 39.936 seconds, ahead of Cesar Nunez Almanza and Jaime Uribe Mogollon of Colombia.

It was the first roller sports race in which Taiwan did not medal at the 2017 Universiade, but it mined nothing but gold the rest of the day.

In the first three days of roller sports competition, Taiwan has won eight gold, eight silver and one bronze, to South Korea's three gold, two silver and five bronze and Colombia's one gold, two silver and six bronze. No other country has medaled in the sport.
