Brussels, Aug. 23 (CNA) Taiwan's representative to Switzerland Gu Ruey-sheng signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with representatives from the University of Zurich (UZH) in Switzerland on Wednesday, according to the Representative Office of Taiwan in Bern.

Gu represented the Taipei-based Ministry Education in signing the MOU, Taiwan's first research/study program in Switzerland, with UZH Division of Social and Business Psychology professor Klaus Jonas and Asien-Orient-Institut professor Wolfgang Behr.

The program will involve a wide range of academic subjects, including culture, history, politics, cross-strait relations, environmental protection and sociology. It represents a milestone in terms of Taiwan studies/research attracting greater attention overseas, Gu said.

As part of the program, from Sept. 2017 to Sept. 2019, the university will schedule new courses, lectures and academic activities relating to Taiwan, while employing academics from Taiwan and Europe, according to the office.

The two professors expressed gratitude for the sponsorship from Taiwan to promote related academic research and studies.

In addition, the university also undertook to increase the number of books it has on Taiwan's related subjects to promote greater public awareness and understanding in Switzerland.
