Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Taiwan's FormoSat-5 satellite team and its partners for successfully launching the first locally developed satellite into orbit early Friday.
FormoSat-5's successful journey into orbit is an indication that Taiwan has taken another giant step in its technological progress, Tsai said, adding that it will create a new momentum in the development of the country's space-related industries.
Earlier, in a twitter post, she said the satellite will gather images and data on the earth's surface to help evaluate natural disasters.
In another Facebook post before the launch, Tsai said FormoSat-5 was carrying Taiwanese technology as well as Taiwanese dream.
