Jakarta, Aug. 26 (CNA) Taiwan is looking to double the number of Indonesian students attending local universities over the next three years, Taiwan's Deputy Education Minister Yao Leeh-ter said Saturday.

Yao, who is currently in Indonesia with representatives from 50 of Taiwan's universities for the 6th annual Indonesia-Taiwan Higher Education Summit, told reporters the ministry hopes to see the number of Indonesians studying at Taiwanese universities double to 10,000 in the next three years.

Yao noted that Indonesian students have shown an increased interest in management, agriculture, tourism, services and environment related studies, in line with the development of country's economy.

There are currently more than 5,000 Indonesian students in Taiwan.

The Indonesia-Taiwan High Education Summit runs from Aug. 26-30 and hosts fairs in Jakarta, Medan and Aceh.

In an attempt to promote the government's New Southbound policy, the ministry also increased the number of scholarships available for Indonesian students from 16 to 30 this year. However, a total of 35 scholarships were ultimately awarded after adjusting based on need.
