Taipei, Aug. 28 (CNA) Taiwanese tennis veterans Chan Yung-jan and Chan Hao-ching captured the women's doubles gold medal at the 2017 Taipei Universiade on Monday, overcoming a tough challenge from their Thai opponents to take the title 6-1, 7-5.

The Chan sisters, currently ranked sixth and 12th in the world, respectively, in doubles on the WTA Tour had entered the match having lost a total of only 12 games in their three Universiade matches before Monday's final.

And they appeared ready to roll over Varatchaya and Varunya Wongteanchai of Thailand after taking the first set 6-1.

But the Thai sisters, both ranked outside the top 100 in doubles, broke the Chans in the eight game and held serve a game later to go up 5-4 in the second set.

The Chans then held serve and got a break of their own, leaving Chan Hao-ching to serve for the match. The Taiwanese averted disaster by saving a break point before Chan Yung-jan clinched the match with an emphatic backhand volley.
