Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) Taiwanese Cheng I-ching had to settle for a silver medal in the women's singles table tennis event at the Taipei Universiade after she lost 2-4 to South Korean Jeon Jihee in the final Tuesday.
Cheng, ranked eighth in the world, won the first game 11-5, lost the next two, and won the fourth to even the score.
However, Jeon, listed 20th in the world rankings, won the crucial fifth game and went on to win sixth 8-11, closing out the match to take the gold medal.
Although Cheng's performance was the best ever by a Taiwanese in the Universiade women's singles table tennis event, she was visibly saddened at having to settle for silver.
Amid warm applause by her fans, she shed tears after the match as she bowed and waved to the audience before leaving the court.
She was the first Taiwanese table tennis player to make it to the final of the women's singles at the Univerisade.
