Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen tweeted Tuesday her government's sympathy to the United States over the catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in southeastern Texas and offered to provide assistance.
"Our thoughts are with Houston as they weather an unprecedented crisis," Tsai wrote in her tweet.
Taiwan's representative to the United States, Stanley Kao, has also conveyed the government's concern to American Institute in Taiwan Chairman James Moriarty over the disaster, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States said in a statement released Monday.
Kao also told Moriarty that Taiwan is ready to help if necessary, according to the office.
As of Monday, all Taiwanese nationals living, studying or doing business in Houston were safe, the office said.
Harvey, which made landfall in Texas last Friday, was the strongest storm to hit the U.S. state since the 1960s. It has brought record rainfall to Houston over the past several days, leaving at least eight people dead.
