Los Angeles, Aug. 29 (CNA) The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Los Angeles is assisting victims and their family members following a car accident involving five Taiwanese nationals in New Mexico early Monday morning U.S. Pacific Time.

The five were on a business trip in the U.S. and driving a 2017 Dodge Van to Texas when they crashed into the road divider in Lordsburg, New Mexico, after the driver swerved to avoid hitting a rabbit, according to the police.

The van was traveling from Arizona and had just crossed the Arizona-New Mexico state line when the crash took place at about 12:55 a.m.

The 25-year old driver, surnamed Wu, and two of the passengers sustained only minor injuries.

The other two passengers who were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, were more seriously injured, with one dead and one hospitalized.

The TECO in LA said it notified the family members of the deceased national, who have since traveled to the U.S. to claim the remains of their loved one.

The three who sustained minor injuries were treated at a local hospital and have since returned to El Paso, Texas, according to Liao Chi-hong, head of the El Paso Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, who said he would be visiting them.

The Wistron Corporation, parent company of Wiwynn for which the five work, said it was making the necessary arrangements to ensure its injured employees receive the best care possible.

Wistron will also work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to assist the family of the deceased employee.
