Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) The government has donated US$800,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The MOFA stated in a press release Saturday that the government "has decided to donate US$800,000 for local governments and community disaster relief efforts" in the wake of the damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

According to a report by the Washington Post, this makes Taiwan one of the few foreign countries to have pledged to donate toward Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

Taiwan has aided the U.S. in the past with hurricane relief. In 2005 after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, the government donated US$2 million.

Humanitarian organizations in Taiwan also aided in disaster relief in 2005, including a donation from Taiwan's Red Cross Society of NT$3.7 million (about US$123.000) and supplies raised and delivered by the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation.

Tzu Chi's branch in the U.S. was able to also lend a helping hand after Hurricane Katrina, aiding 20,000 households in need and donating over US$4.7 million.
