Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) Taiwan is lending a helping hand to Universiade athletes from the U.S. who were unable to fly home Saturday due to Hurricane Harvey.

The flight for 24 of the athletes was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions and flooding in Texas caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Just as it seemed that they would have to spend the night on the streets after the closing of the Taipei 2017 Universiade Athletes' Village that day, National Taiwan Sport University swooped in and offered to put the athletes up in its student dormitories.

The athletes will spend the night there and are scheduled to depart the following evening.

In the meantime, the nearby Guishan police precinct is offering to help the athletes with their needs, and has stationed an officer in the dormitories.

The local farmers' association also presented the athletes with souvenirs in the form of locally produced packs of tea. The atheletes were all very moved by these demonstrations of support and sympathy.
