Taipei, Sept. 8 (CNA) No Taiwanese nationals have been reported injured in a massive earthquake off the coast of southern Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) reported Friday.
MOFA spokeswoman Eleanor Wang stated that the ministry has checked with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Mexico and has confirmed that there have been no reports thus far of deaths or injuries of Taiwanese nationals caused by the 8.0-magnitude earthquake.
The Tourism Bureau also noted that no Taiwanese tour groups in Mexico have been affected.
The bureau confirmed with various local travel agencies that Chiapas, which is nearest to the quake's epicenter, is not a region to which they have sent tour groups.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the earthquake occurred at 6:49 p.m. Thursday (Mexico time) off the coast of Chiapas in southeastern Mexico.
Tsunami warnings have been issued in Mexico following the massive earthquake, which was felt as far away as Mexico City, which lies far to the north of the temblor's epicenter.
