Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) Taiwan's Atomic Energy Council (AEC) said Saturday that it had found no traces of radioactive material in the country in the week following North Korea's recent nuclear bomb test.

In a press statement, the AEC said it had stepped up its monitoring of the environment since North Korea detonated a hydrogen bomb on Sept. 3 but had detected no unusual levels of radionuclides.

The statement came one day after it was reported that South Korea had found traces of radiation in its environment. According to the reports, South Korean officials said the levels of radionuclides were low and posed no threat to the public's safety.

In its statement, the AEC also said that low levels of radionuclides are not harmful to human health but it gave the assurance that it would continue to monitor radiation levels in Taiwan.

Radionuclides are unstable atoms with excessive nuclear energy, such as Caesium-137, Iodine-131, Xenon-135, and Strontium-90, which are produced as a result of nuclear explosions like the one that occurred when North Korea carried out its bomb test, according to the AEC.
