Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) Taiwanese player Hsu Yu-hsiou and Wu Yibing of China beat their Japanese competitors 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 in the junior boys' doubles final of the United States Open Tennis Championships in New York on Saturday to take the title.
It was Hsu's third straight Grand Slam win this year, following his doubles' titles at the Australian Open in January alongside Chinese Zhao Lingx and at in Wimbledon in June with Argentinean Axel Geller.
In New York, the top seeded Hsu and Wu duo started off strong in the first set but began flagging in the second and dropped 0-3 in the third game.
By the 10th game they had recovered well enough to tie 5-5 but the Japanese pair Toru Horie and Yuta Shimizu won the 12th set 7-5.
In the super tie-breaker, Hsu and Wu took one point to go up 7-4 but were soon overpowered by the Japanese who went 9-8.
Hsu and Wu managed to recover, taking advantage of a series of errors by the Japanese, and strong serves by Hsu.
The 18-year-old Taiwanese player, from a single-parent family, did not start formal tennis training until he was in fourth grade. Few people on the international tennis circuit knew about him until he won his first Grand Slam title at the 2017 Australian Open.
Hsu is the second Taiwanese player to win a title at the U.S. Open junior boys' doubles, after Hsieh Cheng-peng in 2009.
