Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) A virtual reality work created jointly by a Taiwanese professor and an American singer has won an award at the 74th Venice Film Festival.
"La Camera Insabbiata," an installation that allows viewers to lose themselves in a fully interactive and immersive animation journey, was awarded the prize at the 2017 festival Saturday for the Best VR Experience.
The VR installation was created by Huang Chien-hsin, an art professor at National Chengchi University's (NCCU) College of Communication, and American singer-songwriter Laurie Anderson, according to a statement released Sunday by NCCU.
It was a difficult process for Huang because his father was in a hospital intensive care unit during the production period and died one day after Huang returned to Taiwan from the U.S., the university said.
Huang has said that he wants to dedicate the award to the memory of his father, according to NCCU.
The university recruited Huang several years ago to lead the development of its digital arts program and help students broaden their global perspective, said Lin Yuan-huei, dean of NCCU College of Communication Dean.
Meanwhile, Taiwan-based smartphone vendor HTC Corp. said in a statement Sunday that its VR center will collaborate with Huang on the establishment of a VR TV and film production base.
