Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) Legislative Yuan Speaker Su Jia-chyuan flew to Japan Sunday to attend the annual meeting of the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians' Union (APPU), the Legislative Yuan said in a statement.

Leading a delegation of 13 lawmakers across party lines, Su left Taiwan in the afternoon for Oita Prefecture on Kyushu, Japan to attend the annual event, according to the statement.

The APPU meeting, which runs from Sept. 18-20, will focus on how to promote tourism and cultural exchanges as a means of boosting the economy.

The APPU, established in 1965, is headquartered in Tokyo as an exchange platform for the legislative bodies of its five founding members -- Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand. Taiwan joined the organization under its official name the Republic of China, according to the statement.

It currently has 21 member nations.
