Taipei, Sept. 18 (CNA) Taiwan will hold an annual nuclear emergency exercise from Thursday to Saturday at the second nuclear power plant in Wanli, New Taipei and neighboring areas, testing the country's emergency notification system, emergency response capabilities and security of government facilities, an Atomic Energy Council (AEC) official announced on Monday.

This year, a record high of more than 10,000 people, including government staffers and local residents, will be mobilized for the drill, compared with 8,000 people last year, according to AEC Deputy Minister Chiou Syh-tsong.

Meanwhile, representatives from the United States, Japan and France will be invited to witness the exercise to promote exchanges in the field while also enhancing their understanding of Taiwan's nuclear response mechanisms and measures, Chiou added.

The drill is designed to inspect and test improvements made to the nation's nuclear safety mechanisms and to strengthen cooperation between emergency rescue teams in New Taipei, Keelung and Taipei in the event of an emergency, according to Chiou.
