Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) Legislative Yuan Speaker Su Jia-chyuan and delegation of Taiwan lawmakers are attending the annual meeting of the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians' Union (APPU）in Japan on Tuesday.
Addressing the meeting, Su said he was attending for the first time as the head of the Republic of China (Taiwan) delegation, according to a statement released by his office.
He said Taiwan is committed to contributing to the international community and is prepared to present several resolutions at the meeting.
The Tokyo-headquartered APPU was established in 1965 as an exchange platform for the legislative bodies of its five founding members -- Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand. It now has 21 member nations.
This year, delegates from Japan, Nauru, Kiribati, Fiji, Palau, Tuvalu, Malaysia, Tonga and Papua New Guinea are also participating in the meeting, which is being held around the theme of "Promoting inbound tourism."
Presenting Taiwan's national report, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Hsiao Bi-khim said Taiwan has a rich natural landscape and tourism resources and is hoping to establish a mechanism to facilitate tourism cooperation and exchanges with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Taiwan also hopes to strengthen youth, cultural and sister-city exchanges to promote the development of the tourism industry in the region, Hsiao said.
