Taipei, Sept. 19 (CNA) Representatives from more than 40 countries around the world arrived in offshore Penghu County Tuesday to compete in the finals of the Global Charity Queen beauty pageant, the county government said that day.

At a welcome ceremony held in front of the county government building, Penghu Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu said it is the first time Penghu has hosted such a grand international beauty pageant, adding that it will allow the contestants to see Penghu's natural beauty and meet its friendly people.

Through the event, Penghu is hoping to market the island group's beauty internationally and increase its global visibility, Chen said.

According to Wang Hsin-pei, chief of Penghu's Tourism Department, there will be a series of activities leading up to finals night on Sept. 23, including photo opportunities for the contestants at various scenic spots.

Other highlights will include a contestant parade in Makung on Sept. 21 and a visit by the contestants to a care center for the disabled, a rock concert and a food fair on Sept. 22, she said.
