Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Taiwan has selected a documentary by local director Huang Hui-chen as its official entry in the foreign-language film category at the 90th Academy Awards.

Huang's film "Small Talk" is a documentary in which she explores her relationship with her lesbian mother A-nu.

As the director describes it, the documentary depicts her mother's past experience with domestic violence, role as a Taoist priestess and her confusion about her mother growing up.

The feature shows how the two find a way to live together through daily conversations, hence the title "Small Talk."

The decision, by the Ministry of Culture's Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, marks the first time Taiwan has submitted a documentary in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category.

"Small Talk" is Huang's first feature film and already won a Teddy Award at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival.

It made more than NT$4 million at the local box office and has been shown at over 50 film festivals around the world.

Nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 23, 2018, with the award show taking place on Mar. 4.
