Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Tang Prize Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Chern Jenn-chuan offered advice on how best to combat climate change at an international meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, Sept. 19-21.

The CEO made his remarks at the International Symposium of the 11th SSMS (Society for Social Management Systems) and the 5th RCND (Regional Conference on Natural Disaster) 2017.

Chern suggested that the battle against climate change should start with socioeconomic issues and governments implementing policies that take into consideration environmental, climate, population and societal factors.

To properly implement necessary and pressing national projects is the most effective approach, he explained.

Thailand has seen floods and droughts in consecutive years, highlighting the urgency of addressing climate change, he noted.

In recent years even developed countries such as Japan and the U.S. have been more frequently impacted by severe natural disasters bringing landslides, floods, destruction of infrastructure, property and loss of life, he added.

The symposium also discussed disaster prevention and rescue, management of post-disaster reconstruction, public construction planning and management, distribution of water, food and resources in the face of environmental change.

The Tang Prize, established in 2012 by Taiwanese entrepreneur Samuel Yin, honors people who have significantly contributed to the fields of sustainable development, biopharmaceutical science, sinology and the rule of law.
