Washington, Sept. 22 (CNA) Taiwan and the U.S. state of Kansas signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on driver's license reciprocity on Friday that allows license-holders from either side to obtain a local license without having to take local tests, Taiwan's representative office in Denver said Friday.

The MOU, which went into effect immediately, makes Kansas the 24th state in the U.S. that has signed a driver's license reciprocity agreement with Taiwan, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Denver (TECO-Denver) said in a statement.

Under the agreement, residents of Kansas with a Taiwanese driver's license do not have to take written or road tests in Kansas and can go straight to motor vehicle offices to apply for a local driver's license. Similarly, Kansas drivers in Taiwan can apply directly for a local license from Taiwan's Motor Vehicles Office.

According to TECO-Denver Director-General Jerry S. Chang, who signed the MOU with Kansas Director of Vehicles David Harper, this agreement will help business people, academics and exchange students from both sides settle into their lives in those areas more easily.

Furthermore, the MOU will help promote economic and cultural exchanges between both sides, Chang noted.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it will continue to work with other U.S. states to provide the same convenience to their residents.
