Taipei, Jan. 23 (CNA) The Taiwan International Balloon Festival held annually in Taitung County has been named one of the top 12 hot air balloon festivals around the world by the Travel Channel.

The Travel Channel cited the festival for its unprecedented number of special-shape balloons in 2017, including a pink pig and a parrot, and praised it for its night activities.

"Visitors can see these balloons ablaze during six night glow concerts, each with a different theme," the Travel Channel wrote.
Chiang Hui-ching, head of the county's Tourism Department, welcomed the honor, saying it was the result of seven years of constantly innovating and trying new ideas since the festival was launched in 2011.

With its unique local characteristics, the Taitung hot air balloon festival has now emerged as a must-see event for visitors from around Taiwan and the rest of the world, she said.

This year's Taiwan International Balloon Festival will be held from June 30 to Aug. 6 and feature concerts and local farm produce and specialties, Chiang said.
Taitung launched the hot air balloon fair earlier this decade to give a boost to the economy of the southeastern Taiwan county that is heavily dependent on tourism.

Other hot air balloon festivals making the Travel Channel's cut were the U.S. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest event of its kind in the world, and Japan's Saga International Balloon Fiesta, the largest in Asia.
