Jakarta, Feb. 21 (CNA) Taiwanese expatriates in Indonesia raised over 1.528 billion rupiah (US$112,327) in donations for disaster relief efforts following a deadly earthquake that struck Hualien County on Feb. 6.

The Taiwan Chambers of Commerce in Indonesia, which spearheaded the donation campaign, presented the check to the Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

TETO head John Chen thanked the Taiwan Chambers of Commerce and its eight branches in Indonesia as well as overseas Taiwanese residing and working in Indonesia for their contributions to relief and rebuilding efforts.

According to Chen, the coming together of people and the efficiency with which they worked in the aftermath of the earthquake made it apparent that "Taiwan's most beautiful feature is its people."

The money collected will be wired to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's disaster relief account.

This is not the first time that the Taiwanese community in Indonesia has contributed to disaster relief efforts in Taiwan.

It has been quick to respond with financial and other support following the 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosions and the 2016 Tainan earthquake, Chiu Yung-fang of the Overseas Community Affairs Council said.
