Taipei, March 22 (CNA) U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Manufacturing Ian Steff arrived in Taiwan on Thursday for a six-day trip to strengthen bilateral trade and investment, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) announced Thursday.

This is Steff's first trip to Taiwan as deputy assistant secretary, according to an AIT statement.

The visit is intended to strengthen bilateral trade, commercial and investment relations. While in Taiwan, Steff will also meet with local senior political and business figures, AIT said.

Steff oversees a broad portfolio of national programs aimed at increasing the global competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers. He is one of the senior officials responsible for executing the Trump Administration's plans to foster growth in U.S. manufacturing jobs and investments, the statement said.

Before joining the U.S. Department of Commerce, Steff served as the state of Indiana's first chief innovation officer.
