Taipei, March 22 (CNA) Ultramarathon athlete Tommy Chen, who won the 4 Deserts Race Series title in 2016, said Thursday his next step is to begin training as a polar explorer.

Speaking at a promotional event for the Taoyuan 100, an international trail running race to be held in Taoyuan next month, Chen said he is looking to improve his ice climbing, abseiling, and polar survival skills.

"My aim is to become a polar explorer in the future," Chen said, adding that he hopes to have many adventures.

The Taoyuan 100, part of the North Face 100 Ultimate Trail Challenge Asia Pacific Series, will be held at Shimen Reservoir in Taoyuan on April 21.

The event will feature four different race categories – the 50-, 20-, 10- and 5-kilometer challenges – and will offer spectacular views of nature, according to Chen.

He said he will compete in the 10km hike, while his parents will join the 5km fun run.

"It will be fun and I'm sure they can complete the race," Chen joked.
