Li Guoxiu of Ping-Fong Acting Troupe: Lifelong Dedication to Taiwanese Drama 屏風李國修 豐富本土戲劇風貌

Established in 1986, Ping-Fong Acting Troupe has presented 40 original works and has held the Ping Fong Theatre Festival for 5 times, which has contributed much for the Taiwanese Drama by inviting groups from all over the world to perform. Their tour program “Small Plays into Masterpieces” has put great effort in producing more drama audiences, and, with the major concept “Local is Global,” created more life stories in Taiwan, the troupe has totally accomplished more than 1700 performances in 23 cities around the world, and has nurtured many extraordinary local actors and actresses.

屏風表演班成立於1986年,發表40回原創作品,歷年來共舉辦5屆「屏風演劇祭」,邀請國內外表演團體演出,帶動台灣劇場發展,近年推廣「屏風小戲大作」巡演計畫,培養地方戲劇觀賞人口,多年來秉持「Local is Global」概念,寫下台灣生命故事,完成超過1700場次的演出,巡迴海內外23個城市,更培育出許多優秀本土演員。

What should never be omitted when mentioning Ping-Fong Acting Troupe is its establisher Li Guoxiu (Hugh K.S. Lee), who faithfully followed the motto inherited from his father “A person only needs to accomplish a single important thing in his whole life,”which also became the major principle of Ping-Fong. However, what Li has accomplished is more than one thing. Talented in writing, directing and acting , Li is the first winner of the National Culture and Arts Foundation Prize in Drama Section, and has performed more than 100 characters in total thousands times of performances. Being awarded “The Most Potential Drama Actor” in the 17th Golden Bell Award and the 10th Taipei Culture Award, Li also received The 19th Most Outstanding Asian Artists Award from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Lincoln Center and Chinese American Art Council in 1999. In 2011 with the representative work ‘The Apocalypse of Peking Opera’, Li received the 34th Wu San-lien Award in Short Plays; furthermore in 2012, Li was awarded with “The Spirit of Drama Prize” in 2012 Shanghai One Drama Awards. In July 2nd 2013, Li dedicated his farewell to this world at the age of 58.

提到屏風,不能不提起它的創辦人李國修,李國修父親留下的家訓「人,一輩子做好一件事,就功德圓滿了」,是屏風的創團宗旨,但李國修一輩子做得好的不只一件事,被喻為「編導演三絕」的他,是第1屆國家文藝獎戲劇類得主,演出逾千場、超過百種角色,曾獲頒第17屆金鐘獎「最具潛力戲劇演員」、「第10屆台北文化獎」,1999年獲紐約市文化局、林肯中心、美華藝術協會頒予「第19屆亞洲傑出藝人金獎」,2011年以「京戲啟示錄」成為「第34屆吳三連文學獎戲劇劇本獎」得主,2012年獲頒上海壹戲劇大賞「戲劇精神傳承獎」,2013年7月2日因癌症辭世,享年58歲。

As Ping-Fong Acting Troupe insists in playing original scripts instead of translated versions, every play is written by Li Guoxiu or the troupe members together, in which the storyline generally tells how normal people live in wars and difficult times, and how the society is reflected through Li’s favorite absurd comedies. Li’s stories reflect the common memories of all people living in Taiwan.

屏風堅持不演翻譯劇本,每部戲都是李國修寫劇本或團員集體創作,他擅長以小人物為主軸創作荒謬喜劇,也書寫戰亂流亡,反映社會現象,他講的故事是台灣人的共同記憶。

In 1994 Li and Ping-Fong Acting Troupe cooperated with Shanghai Modern Theatre to perform the play ‘Shamlet’,which made Ping-Fong the first troupe to perform in Mainland China. In 2007 when he finished his performance of the 100th Shamlet, all audience stood up and gave their regards with loud applause that lasted for 8 minutes. Artists in Mainland China even compared him to Moliere, the most famous French playwright.

1994年李國修率領屏風與上海現代人劇社聯合演出「莎姆雷特」,是首度到中國大陸演出的台灣劇團,2007年他在北京演出「莎姆雷特」第100場,謝幕時全場起立鼓掌8分半鐘,大陸藝文界讚譽他宛如法國知名劇作家莫里哀。

President Ma Ying-jeou sent his greatest regard to Li’s everlasting love dedicated to Taiwanese drama and his spirit passed to the next generation. Lin Hwai-min, the founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, also commented that for better or for worse, Li’s enthusiasm for plays and stage performances has never changed.

總統馬英九肯定李國修傳承及培養人才的大愛;雲門舞集創辦人林懷民說,在李國修身上看到對戲和舞台的熱愛,不論順境逆境都一路堅持。

The Collected Plays that consisted of 94,000 words was accomplished by Li during his recuperation. In this work, Li invited everyone to take a look at his life through the 27 plays. Right before he passed away, he recorded a message to the public: “This is my last bow to you, and in the afterlife, I will do my best to continue my work as a playwright and a director, to open up the door, get on the stage, and—action.”

李國修養病時完成94萬字的「戲劇作品全集」,他請大家透過這27個劇本細細品味他的戲劇人生,過世前他錄音留下遺言,「這是我最後1次謝幕,在那裡,我會認真修行我的編導演,開門,上台,演戲。」

‘Far Away from Home’ is a tragicomedy considering the conflict in an old soldier forgotten by the history, and his double identifications of both Taiwan and Mainland China. The performance of Li Guoxiu (central with the fan) in this play was praised as “the highly professional performance at the same level of Chaplin’s.”

「西出陽關」是一齣透過被歷史遺忘的老兵重新省思兩岸情結的悲喜劇,李國修(中持扇者)在此劇的演出被評為「最具卓別林高度的演出」。
