The prestigious Chinese American Academic and Professional Society (美東華人學術聯誼會) bestowed a lifetime achievement award upon Chinese American historian Yu Ying-shih (余英時) in recognition of his outstanding achievements in Sinology during its annual conference in New York Aug. 14-15.
Yu, a Princeton University emeritus professor, is regarded by his peers as the greatest Chinese intellectual historian of his generation.
The 85-year-old won the U.S. Library of Congress' John W. Kluge Prize in 2006 for his lifetime achievements in the study of humanity, becoming the first Chinese scholar to win the honor.
In 2014, he was also awarded the Tang Prize in Sinology for his original research and insight into the intellectual history of China.
The Tang Prize Selection Committee said in its citation that Yu was selected for his mastery of and insight into Chinese intellectual, political and cultural history, with an emphasis on his profound research into the history of public intellectuals in China."
Yu received a cash prize of NT$40 million (US$1.3 million) and a research grant of up to NT$10 million to be used within five years.

第1屆唐獎漢學獎得獎人余英時在中國思想史貢獻屢屢創新，「究天人之際，通古今之變」治史宗旨鼓勵年輕學者以新角度詮釋中國文化，今天獲美東華人學術聯誼會「終身成就獎」。
被視為美國華人學術重鎮的美東華人學術聯誼會（CAAPS）今年歡慶40週年， 14、15日在紐約市舉行年會，會中宣布「終身成就獎」頒給余英時，由唐獎教育基金會執行長陳振川代領取，轉贈唐獎基金會。
CAAPS說，余英時是中西學界一致推崇的21世紀中國史學泰斗，在中國思想史上屢屢創新，「究天人之際，通古今之變」治史宗旨也鼓勵年輕學者以新方法、新角度了解與詮釋中國文化。
此外，余英時在超過半世紀的學術生涯中，深入探究中國歷史、思想、政治與文化，2006年獲頒美國國會圖書館「克魯格」人文與社會科學終身成就獎（John W. Kluge Prize），成為首位獲殊榮的華人學者；2014年9月更獲頒第1屆唐獎漢學獎得主。
CAAPS表示，余英時治學不倦，不忘提攜後進，去年獲唐獎後，以獎金新台幣1000萬元成立「余英時先生人文研究獎」，鼓勵更多年輕學子投入中華文化研究，完全體現現代士大夫風範。
陳振川說，非常感謝余英時重視及肯定唐獎對於世界之價值及其可帶動的貢獻，並將CAAPS這麼重要的獎項轉贈給唐獎教育基金會，象徵余英時、CAAPS及唐獎關係的接軌。另外，錢煦院士也致上特別祝福，鼓勵CAAPS在未來40年持續把對美東的影響力擴大到全美，並像唐獎一樣，放眼全世界，對全球做出貢獻。(中央社提供)
