Nangang high-speed rail station expected to open in mid-July Taipei, Jan. 6 (CNA) The new Nangang station on Taiwan's only high-speed railway line is expected to start commercial operation in mid-July, as the construction work has been progressing smoothly, Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corp. (THSRC) said Wednesday.

During an inspection tour of the Nangang station project, Premier Mao Chi-Kuo (毛治國) said that when it is completed the total length of the high-speed rail line will extend from 345 kilometers to nearly 350 km.

"This is very good news for commuters between the south and north" of the country, Mao said. The Nangang station is the 12th on the high-speed railway line, which has one stop roughly every 30 kilometers.

Just over a month ago, three new stations were opened on the line, in Miaoli, Changhua and Yunlin counties. With the opening of the Nangang station in the busy Taipei area, commuters will have more flexibility, Mao said.

The Nangang station was planned at first as a logistics station to service and resupply trains but was changed to a regular operational station, which will play an important role in the development of the Nangang area, Mao said.

The 12 high speed rail stations will be, from north to south, Nangang, Taipei, Banqiao, Toayuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan and Tsoying (Kaohsiung). (Courtesy of CNA)
