Taipei, Dec. 27 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez Wednesday on his re-election and said the two countries will pursue closer relations.

Speaking via a video conference call at the Presidential Office, Tsai expressed her most sincere blessings on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan.
Honduras under the leadership of Hernandez has been continually improving, and the Central American ally's relationship with Taiwan has also been improving because of his support, said Tsai.

Over the past year, exchanges between the two countries in various fields have been getting closer through continuing bilateral cooperation programs, she said.

In the future, the government will continue to jointly promote economic and trade cooperation programs, increase imports of Honduran agricultural products, encourage more investment by Taiwanese businesses and participate in Honduras' infrastructure development, said Tsai.

With regard to Honduran support for Taiwan at various international events, Tsai expressed her thanks and said that the nation cherishes the friendship and looks forward to working with Hernandez to promote and contribute to the friendship between the two countries.

She also expressed her condolences for Hilda Hernandez, the Honduran president's sister, who died in a helicopter crash near the capital city of Tegucigalpa Dec. 16.

Hernandez was declared winner of last month's election in Honduras Dec. 17, amid ongoing opposition claims of fraud, three weeks after election day.
