Taipei, Jan. 25 (CNA) Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., trading as Foxconn Technology Group, was named a 2017 Clarivate Analytics (CA) Top 100 Global Innovator, according to a report from CA on Thursday.
The annual report names the world's most successful organizations active in innovation through research and development and intellectual property protection.
According to the report, 45 organizations from Asia made it onto the list compared to 36 from North America and 19 from Europe, indicating Asia's growing role in global innovation.
Of the 45 organizations in Asia, Japan has 39 companies on the 2017 list, up from 34 in 2016, while South Korea featured Lucky Goldstar (LG), LSIS and Samsung, the same three companies from last year, according to the report.
Taiwan increased its presence with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and newcomer Hon Hai, while China also made a reappearance with Huawei making the list following previous showings in 2014 and 2016.
Hon Hai made the list for the first time due to its impressive innovations over the past five years, as well as its expanded globalization and influence, according to the report, adding that the company is now looking more globally to protect its innovations and facilitate broader commercialization.
A key area that is assessed to identify the world's most innovative organizations is the globalization or international breadth of patent filings across four main markets including Europe, China, Japan and the United States.
This year saw six newcomers including Facebook, Fuji Electric, Hon Hai, Molex, Nichia and Western Digital, according to the report.
The findings in the report are based on patent analysis using Clarivate Analytics proprietary data and analytical tools, including Derwent Innovation and Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI), which employs a methodology that has been verified by the market over the years.
Each organization's portfolio strength and quality is examined using the methodology and by focusing on volume of patents, success in patent filings, breadth of invention filings and external citations to the portfolio. Together these are collated into a combined score which is then used to determine the most innovative organizations around the world.
