Kaohsiung, July 4 (CNA) The son of late Taiwanese decathlete legend Yang Chuan-kwang on Wednesday donated his father's 1960 Olympic silver medal to the National Sports Training Center (NSTC).
Yang was the first Taiwanese athlete to win an Olympic medal, NSTC Chief Executive Officer Li Wen-bin said at a formal donation ceremony.
He said the silver decathlon medal will be placed in the center's hall of fame.
With just over 40 days to go before the start of the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, the medal will serve as great encouragement and motivation to Taiwanese athletes preparing for the games, Li said.
Yang, known as the "Iron Man of Asia," was a decathlete who represented the Republic of China (Taiwan) at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games and won the first-ever Olympic medal for the country. He died of a stroke in 2007.
At Wednesday's ceremony, his son Cedric Yang said his late father was passionate about sports and loved Taiwan.
He said that even though his father has passed away but his spirit is still with the family and they wish to donate the medal to the NSTC to remind everyone of his father's love and dedication to Taiwan, said Cedric Yang, who returned from the United States with his two daughters to bring the medal.
The donation ceremony was also attended by NSTC board member Chen Chuan-shou, National Taiwan Sport University President Kao Chin-hsung, and Wang Han-chung, head of the Education Sports Administration Planning Division.
