2018 William Jones Cup women's division tips off in New Taipei

Taipei, July 25 (CNA) The women's division of the 2018 William Jones Cup, an annual international basketball tournament, opened Wednesday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei.

With the participation of a total of six teams from New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, India, and the host country, Taiwan which is represented by two teams, the tournament is being conducted on a single round-robin basis and will run through July 29.

Taiwan's Republic of China I team warmed up slow and was routed by Japan 55-88 on its opening game.

The game tipped off with Japan quickly gaining a 11-2 lead that made Taiwan struggle to keep up. Japan dominated the first half of the match 48-26.

According to statistics for the first half of the game, Taiwan managed to sink only 25 percent of their shots while Japan was firing up and sinking 55 percent.

Taiwan made an effort to strengthen their defenses in the third quarter and managed to only allow Japan to walk away with 19 points, while scoring 17 points at the end of the quarter.

Taiwan's defenses were quickly routed in the fourth quarter as Japan sank 21 points to finish the game with Taiwan losing to a 33-point deficit.

In other matches played on the opening day, New Zealand defeated India 114-39 while South Korea beat Taiwan's Republic of China II team 81-64.
