Taipei, Dec. 26 (CNA) Anticipating that 5,000 workers will retire from the company over the next five years, leading telecom provider Chunghwa Telecom Co. has launched a policy overhaul and a campaign to recruit young talent, it said Wednesday.

More than 500 workers have applied to retire in the second half of 2018, and Chunghwa Telecom is likely to be hit with the biggest retirement wave it has ever faced from next year through 2023, according to the company.

To deal with the huge drain on its workforce as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age, the company will need to bolster its manpower and talent pool as it diversifies into big data, mobile payments, artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and 5G, it said.

The company expects to hire 1,600 people in 2019 and then another 1,000 new workers annually through 2023, as it transitions to new technologies, Chunghwa Telecom Chairman Cheng Yu said.

Chunghwa Telecom is the largest telecommunications operator by subscribers in Taiwan and currently employs around 23,000 workers.
