Taipei, March 26 (CNA) Internet giant Google Inc. on Tuesday unveiled a plan to expand its footprint in Taiwan by doubling its office space in the country.

Google will expand its presence in Taiwan by acquiring a new office complex at Taipei Far Eastern Telecom Park (Tpark) in New Taipei's Banqiao District, Rick Osterloh, the senior vice president of hardware at Google, said at a press conference in Taipei.

The company, which currently has 2,000 employees in Taiwan and plans to recruit several hundred more, mainly targeting female workers, expects to move its offices into Tpark starting from late 2020, he said.

Taiwan has emerged as the company's largest research and development center in Asia since Google completed a deal last year to acquire a large part of Taiwan's HTC Corp.'s smartphone assets.

It also plays a core role in Google's quest to dominate the artificial intelligence arena in the world and has made great contributions to its Pixel series mobile phone sales, according to Osterloh.

Google's Intelligent Taiwan project, which was officially unveiled in March last year, has reached its goal of nurturing over 5,000 individuals trained in artificial intelligence (AI) and over 50,000 digital marketers in 2018, said Google Taiwan Managing Director Chien Lee-feng .

This year, the project aims to train over 10,000 AI people and 100,000 digital marketers to make Taiwan's AI and digital education more accessible.
