筆者於2009年9月9日，下午9點9分9秒在佛羅里達州(簡稱佛州)奧蘭多市郊迪士尼 Contemporary Resort的Nutcracker Ballroom & Lobby參加佛州中華學人協會主辦的歡迎招待會。隨後四天的活動，包括第一屆「台灣和佛州高等教育交流發展會議」和20週年慶及「北美洲華人科技文化研討會」。閉幕前，頒獎晚會上，新舊會長交接，劉英接任新會長，筆者獲選2011年準會長；並有精彩的音樂歌舞和雜技、等節目，近300人來自北美各地及台灣與會，共享藝術盛宴。
當晚還頒發了2009年度新設置的呂金功獎，有「柑橘奇才(Citrus Wizard)」稱譽的呂金功(Lue Gim Gong，亦有人翻譯成劉錦濃1、或呂錦濃2、或陸金綱3等)之名設立，他是第一位到中佛州開發柑橘等農產品的華人，包括開發出港台人士滿喜愛甜味適中、橙味濃郁、作為飯前飯後水果最好不過的「蜜篤橙 (Valencia Orange)」。當晚由迪蘭 (DeLand) 市長艾普瑞代表受獎。頒獎前播放了一段由46張圖片英文旁白約5分鐘視頻。筆者當時起了一個念頭：去迪蘭市採訪和將旁白翻譯成中文來給僑胞分享。
五年後，筆者和內人淑玲、小兒子啟瑞在參加佛州中華學人第25屆年會後，特別前往迪蘭市有機會採訪西瓦倫西亞的縣立歷史學會辦公室經理 (Office Manager, West Volusia Historical Society)4杜森伯瑞(Eric Dusenbery) 。筆者問了一些 Lue Gim Gong 的相關資料5。杜森伯瑞很高興來個識家採訪，陪我們去呂金功墓地，也幫我們與呂金功紀念銅像合影。小兒子也好奇地問著剛在市中心鬧區見到一座建築物牆面呈現出呂金功和公雞同框壁畫的背後故事，杜森伯瑞說那是呂金功的寵物，多年前在果園裏從野豬口中救出的小雞。從那時起，他們形影不離。杜森伯瑞也提供筆者一些有關在紐約展覽呂金功事跡的籌備計劃：杜森伯瑞曾提供呂金功的相關資料給紐約歷史學會 (New York Historical Society) 以籌辦於2014年9月26日開幕的「美國華人歷史展」。

一轉眼，又過了五年。日前，家人有幸受邀參加「福衛七號衛星發射觀禮」。2010 年台美雙方簽署技術合作協定，由台灣科技部所屬財團法人國家實驗研究院國家太空中心(NSPO)與美國國家海洋暨大氣總署(NOAA)共同執行，建置氣象觀衛星名稱為「福爾摩沙衛星七號」。包括6枚衛星的福衛七號氣象衛星升空採用 SpaceX 公司的獵鷹運載火箭 (Falcon) ，於2019年6月25日美東時間凌晨2點30分在佛羅里達州甘迺迪太空中心的美國太空總署 (NASA) 基地進行發射，六枚衛星脫離火箭，並與達爾文海外站與地面接觸，成功通聯。觀禮活動也包括相關的任務說明會和慶功宴等。美台政要、及來自台灣與美國當地的人士共同見證了此盛舉。
之後，筆者夫婦與大兒子啓瑋到大約一小時車程外的迪蘭市市中心去參觀由奧蘭多藝術家Courtney Canova於2003年以「呂金功和他的寵物公雞March」的壁畫，地址為237 North Woodland Boulevard, DeLand, FL。可惜，壁畫已換成房地產經紀商的廣告。經查訊後，方知2015年一輛車撞向牆壁毀了壁畫6，兩年前，房地產經紀商購買該建築物的產權而換成自己的廣告。

「柑橘奇才」 呂金功於1860年出生於中國廣東台山的農民家庭。幼年時，他就有機會接觸到「農作物授粉」的經驗。
在呂12歲時和他的叔叔移民到美國，呂的父母為他們準備了一些絲綢以便路途中變賣換成盤纏。呂先在舊金山的唐人街社區落戶，16歲搬到馬薩諸塞州。在那裡，呂在桑普森 (Calvin T. Sampson)7 擁有的一家製鞋廠工作。 桑普森是佛羅里達州迪蘭市(DeLand, Florida) 斯泰森大學 (Stetson University)8的贊助人。呂在製鞋廠工作期間遇到了教會主日學的老師蒲芬妮 (Fannie Burlingame)9 。呂和芬妮最後成為他終生的朋友。
呂在馬薩諸塞州期間，芬妮僱請呂當她家中的園丁。當時，芬妮將呂歸化為基督教徒，也幫助呂成為美國公民。當呂患上結核病時，芬妮的醫生建議將呂搬到氣候溫暖的地方。因此，在1886年，芬妮將呂搬遷到佛羅里達州的迪蘭市，並且僱用呂照顧她和她的姊姊共同擁有的橘子園。
在迪蘭市，呂開始了他的園藝實驗。他利用小時候在中國學到的作物授粉技術開發了一種早熟的蘋果以及結果成串的番茄。當呂看著家園裏的蜜蜂，引起了對柑橘異花授粉的興趣。1895年，佛羅里達州遭遇到歷史上最嚴重的凍災，摧毀了該州幾乎所有的柑橘園，包括呂所負責的果園。
以上的幾件事，促使他研發出幾種新的葡萄柚：包括耐寒又不容易脫落的品種、一種在樹枝上只單獨生長一個大果實而非成串小果實的品種、以及多種芳香的品種。其他的園藝成就包括一種15英尺高的櫻桃醋栗(又名燈籠果)和一種等到感恩節前才成熟的桃子。
1888年，呂將兩種橙子的品種交叉授粉，生產出一種可在初秋成熟的甜果，也使其更耐寒。並命名為 Lue Gim Gong Orange由Glen St. Mary Nurseries銷售，這種橙子以「園藝服務的柑橘類水果」類獲得了第一個銀質懷爾德獎章 (Silver Wilder Medal)10 。120年後，Lue Gim Gong Orange仍在佛羅里達種植，並以更為人熟知的當地的縣名瓦倫西亞 (Valencia)名來銷售。
芬妮於1903年去世時，留下她在迪蘭市的財產和現金10,000美元給呂。
在失去芬妮後的餘生，一直在思念她的痛苦中度過。呂悄悄地作試驗並發展他的果園。他只有兩匹馬和一隻名叫March的公雞陪伴。呂為一名虔誠的基督徒，還在家後面的一個小涼亭裏供社區人士舉行星期日祈禱儀式。
迪蘭市的居民也熱情地照顧呂，直到他20年後去世，享年65歲。來自世界各地的人們參加了他的葬禮，讚揚呂的勇氣，才華、和溫良的精神。這些後來都記錄在兩本有關他的書中： 《木魚歌 (Wooden Fish Songs)》11和《獨角獸的禮物 (Gift of the Unicorn)》12。
西瓦倫西亞的縣立歷史學會於迪蘭市立博物館，有一座呂的半身雕像和紀念花園，以及在市中心鬧區的一座建築物的整面牆呈現出呂和公雞March的壁畫等等。
呂金功是一位華裔美國人、屢獲殊榮的園藝家、並被稱佛羅里達州的“柑橘奇才”。今晚，佛州中華學人協會以呂的名義設立年度獎項來紀念他的深厚遺產。

”Citrus Wizard" Lue Gim Gong was born in Canton, China in 1860 to a family of farmers. It was there as a young boy that he first learned about pollination.
At the age of 12, Lue immigrated to America with his uncle and a bolt of silk his parents gave him to sell when he arrived. He lived in San Francisco's Chinatown community until age 16 when he moved to Massachusetts. There, he worked in a shoe factory owned by C.T. Sampson, a donor to DeLand’s Stetson University, and he met Sunday school teacher Fannie Burlingame. Lue and Fannie were destined to become lifelong friends.
While in Massachusetts, Fannie hired Lue to tend to her family’s garden. She also converted him to Christianity and helped him become an American citizen. When Lue came down with tuberculosis, his doctors advised him to move to a warmer climate. So, in 1886, Fannie relocated Lue to DeLand where she and her sister owned property, and he went to work caring for the family’s orange grove.
It was in DeLand where Lue began his horticultural experiments. Using the pollination techniques, he learned in China, Lue developed an apple that ripened earlier than other varieties … and a tomato plant that grew in clusters. Watching the bees in the family grove sparked Lue’s interest in citrus cross pollination. Then, in 1895, the worst freezes in Florida’s history destroyed nearly all of the state’s citrus groves, including Lue's.
These events led to his producing several varieties of grapefruit, including a cold-tolerant version that was slower to drop from the tree, another which grew singly on the branch rather than clumps, and an aromatic variety that measured 21 inches around. Other horticultural accomplishments included a 15 foot high cherry currant and a peach that would ripen by Thanksgiving.
In 1888, he cross-pollinated two orange varieties to produce a sweet fruit that ripened in early fall, making it more resistant to the cold. The Lue Gim Gong Orange was distributed by Glen St. Mary Nurseries and it became is the first citrus fruit to earn a Silver Wilder Medal for outstanding service to horticulture. One hundred twenty years later, the Lue Gim Gong Orange is still grown in Florida and sold under the more commonly-known name of Valencia.
When Fannie died in 1903, she left Lue her DeLand property and $10,000.
Devastated by her death, Lue spent the remainder of his life quietly experimenting and developing his groves in the company of his closest companions – two pet horses and a rooster named March. A devout Christian, he also held Sunday prayer services for the community in a small gazebo behind his home.
The citizens of DeLand tended to Lue’s needs until the day he died two decades later at the age of 65. People from around the world attended his funeral; praising Lue for his courage, genius and gentle spirit. These traits would later be chronicled in two books about his life – Wooden Fish Songs and Gift of the Unicorn.
The West Volusia Historical Society pays homage to Lue’s pioneering spirit with a bust sculpture and a memorial garden at the DeLand House Museum … and a larger-than-life mural of Lue and his rooster adorns a downtown building.
Lue Gim Gong was a Chinese-American … an award-winning horticulturalist … and Florida’s "Citrus Wizard". Tonight, we honor his profound legacy by establishing an award in his name. It will be presented annually by the Chinese American Scholars and Professionals Association of Florida. CASPAF’s “Lue Gim Gong” Award.
