Crime drama 'The Victims' Game' tops Golden Bell Awards nominations

Taipei, Aug. 26 (CNA) The Taiwanese Netflix crime series "The Victims' Game" and two mini-series -- "The Making of an Ordinary Woman" and "Nowhere Man" -- led the nominations at the 55th Golden Bell Awards in the TV category on Wednesday with eight nods each.

"The Victim's Game" gained a nomination for best TV series, in addition to nominations for best leading actor and best newcomer, in roles played by Joseph Chang and Moon Lee, respectively.

The crime drama revolves around a forensic scientist with Asperger's syndrome who risks everything to solve a series of mysterious murders after he discovers a link with his estranged daughter.

Other nominations include best director, which went to David Chuang and Chen Kuan-chung for jointly directing the series.

The crime drama also received nods for best writing, best cinematography, best film editing, and best art and design.

"Nowhere Man" received nominations for best TV mini-series and best leading actor in a mini-series and TV movie, also played by Chang.

The mini-series, which centers on a death row inmate who experiences alternate timelines, also received nods for best supporting actor and actress, played by Jacob Wang and Mavis Fan, respectively.

It also received recognition for best cinematography, best sound effects, best lighting, and best art and design for a TV series.

"The Making of an Ordinary Woman" also tied for the most nominations, with nods for best mini-series and best leading actress in a mini-series and TV movie, the latter shared by Bella Wu and Hsieh Ying-Hsuan.

Asked why there were two nominations for best leading actress, Chu Yu-ning), director of the Golden Bell jury, said that it keeps all the actors and actresses working hard, believing that there is a fair chance for anyone to be nominated.

The comedy drama, which depicts the story of a woman who grows up in a strict family in southern Taiwan and later tries to establish herself as an unapologetic, confident woman in the capital city of Taipei, also received nods for joint best directors Yi-Wen Yen and Chen Chang-lun, and recognition for best supporting actress, best writing and best editing.

Meanwhile, special awards will be given to veteran actor Lin Yi-hsiung and the late Taiwanese opera actress Hsiao Feng-hsien for their contributions to TV.

A total of 190 entries were nominated from among 2,055 submitted to this year's awards, up from 1,995 last year, according to the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development under the Ministry of Culture.

The 190 nominated entries will vie for 39 award categories at the 55th Golden Bell Awards in the category of TV on Sept. 26 at the National Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, with a star-studded lineup set to grace the red carpet from 5 pm.
