Taipei, Oct. 3 (CNA) American-Taiwanese songstress Joanna Wang won the Best Mandarin Album Award for her album "Love is Calling Me" at the 31st Golden Melody Awards in Taipei Saturday.
In her acceptance speech, Wang said she was "very touched" by the effort put in by everyone to make the awards ceremony possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 32-year-old thanked her parents, record producer and other colleagues at her company.
Wang's retro robot-space-themed album has 11 tracks that include songs in Japanese and Cantonese in addition to Mandarin, showcasing her diverse linguistic abilities.
One of the highlights of the album is a cover of "I Only Care About You," made famous by Teresa Teng (1953-1995), one of the most influential singers in Asian recording history.
Wang's "Love is Calling Me" edged out G.E.M.'s "City Zoo," Peggy Hsu's "Hypnocity," Sandee Chan's "Juvenile A," Waa Wei's "Hidden, Not Forgotten" and Wu Qing-feng's "Spaceman."
"Love is Calling Me" was also nominated for album of the year, best female Mandarin vocalist, best music video for the song "I Only Care About You" and best arrangement for the song "Blues in the Rain."
This is the second time Wang has won at the Golden Melody Awards, following her win last year when she took home the Jury Award for her album "Modern Tragedy."
Wang, the daughter of Taiwanese music producer Wang Chi-ping , released her debut double album in 2008 and has since released over 10 albums with songs performed in English, Mandarin and Japanese.
The Golden Melody Awards was established in 1990 with the goal of promoting and recognizing excellence in the local music industry.
The ceremony is usually held in May or June, but was postponed until Oct. 3 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
