Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) Taiwan's top ranked female table tennis player Cheng I-ching said she plans to make further adjustments ahead of the 2020 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Finals after losing in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup held in China on Monday.

"It has been a long time since I last competed in an international event. I didn't have the right mindset and didn't handle the tempo of the match well," Cheng told CNA Tuesday.

Cheng won her first international match in more than eight months in the round of 16 at the World Cup in the city of Waihai against Wu Yue of the United States 11-5, 11-4, 11-4, 11-3 in less than 26 minutes to reach the quarterfinals also on Monday.

However, later the same day the world No. 8, lost to world No. 25, Han Ying of Germany, in a match that lasted nearly 1 hour and 3 minutes 12-10, 3-11, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6.

Cheng, who had her best World Cup performance in 2016 when she was a finalist, said she failed to take advantage of her 2-1 lead and push on, playing too safely and waiting for her opponent to make mistakes.

Despite the upset in the three-day World Cup event, Cheng said she will work on refining her game before mixed doubles partner Lin Yun-ju  joins her for the ITTF Finals to be held in Zhengzhou, China Nov. 19-22.

Following the women's event, Lin and four-time Olympian Chuang Chih-yuan will compete in the Men's World Cup in Waihai Nov. 13-15.

The 19-year-old Lin, currently world No. 7, won third place when he made his Men's World Cup debut in 2019.
