
The Taoyuan-based LCGMH, whose financial statement includes that of Taipei Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, generated an overall profit of NT$7.22 billion (US$252 million) in 2019, according to the report.
LCGMH, which currently has 1,926 doctors and 3,653 beds, topped the list of the most profitable hospitals in Taiwan for four years in a row.
Meanwhile, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital ranked second, recording a profit of NT$5.98 billion in 2019, while its Taoyuan and Keelung branches were also listed among the top 10.
National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) was third, with NT$2.44 billion in overall profit in 2019, followed by Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital with NT$2.14 billion, and China Medical University Hospital NT$1.97 billion.
In Taiwan, the overall profit reported by a medical facility may include not only proceeds from healthcare services but also from stocks, parking and food courts services, and other businesses, according to an Apple Daily report, which cited NHIA official Liu Lin-yi.
The NHIA report showed that China Medical University Hospital in Taichung took in the biggest profit from healthcare services in 2019, reporting NT$1.62 billion, while NTUH was second with NT$1.42 billion.
Overall, 194 medical institutions in Taiwan, or 87 percent of the total, reported a profit in 2019, compared with 85 percent the previous year, according to Lin.
Under the National Health Insurance Act, NHIA-contracted medial institutions are required to disclose their financial statements if their overall annual profit exceeds NT$200 million.
The 2019 report covered statements by 19 medical centers, 81 regional hospitals, 120 district hospitals, and three basic-level clinics.
It showed that 223 medical institutions claimed a total NT$443.8 billion in National Health Insurance reimbursements in 2019.
