CORONAVIRUS/President Tsai calls for unity amid COVID-19 challenges

Taipei, June 2 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Wednesday urged the public to stand united in the fight against the current COVID-19 outbreak and said her government will spare no effort to contain the disease.

"It is our responsibility, as the ruling party, to alleviate people's worries and explore all avenues to deal with the problem," Tsai said at a meeting of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Standing Committee.

Noting that there are differing opinions in the country on how to best to contain the current spread of domestic COVID-19 infections, Tsai advised that people follow the protocols and guidelines put forth by Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

She also called for public support for the country's medical personnel, firefighters, police officers, and other frontline workers, and she urged hospitalized COVID-19 patients to cooperate with the healthcare workers.

That call was made by the president amid several reports of COVID-19 patients refusing to abide by hospital regulations.

Meanwhile, Tsai said there was no truth to the accusations by some commentators that her government was not keen on importing COVID-19 vaccines because it was favoring domestic vaccine makers.

No evidence has been presented in support of those accusations or the claims that government officials stand to benefit from the successful development of domestic vaccines, she said.
