Taipei, June 12 (CNA) A person reported Friday as the first death among COVID-19 vaccine recipients was confirmed to have died of a heart attack, an official of the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Saturday.

The deceased, whose gender and age were not disclosed, had coronary artery disease which led to a fatal heart attack, CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said during a press conference, citing the autopsy report.

The death was the first listed as a possible adverse event after receiving the AstraZenenca vaccine by the CECC, since the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination program began in Taiwan on March 22.

According to a CECC statement released on Friday, the deceased had a history of strokes and liver cirrhosis and was undergoing kidney dialysis.

The individual developed a dry cough two days after receiving the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and later a poor appetite, sore neck, nausea and had difficulty with bowel movements, according to the CECC.

The discomfort lasted until the sixth day after the vaccination, when the individual vomited in the morning and fell unconscious around noon, the CECC said.

An ambulance was called, but the person was pronounced dead before arriving at the hospital, later testing negative for COVID-19, according to the CECC.

The CECC reported no new adverse events on Saturday, and the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered as of 10 a.m. that day reached 799,129, including 774,260 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and 24,869 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

As of Friday, the CECC reported 1,061 incidents involving COVID-19 vaccine recipients experiencing side effects or allergic reactions, with two related to the Moderna vaccine, the rollout of which began Wednesday.
