Taipei, June 17 (CNA) Taiwanese athletes won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals on the opening day of the 2021 Asian Taekwondo Championships in Beirut on Wednesday.

In the men's −68 kilogram event, Huang Yu-jen (黃鈺仁), the bronze medalists at the 2018 Asian Championships, snatched Taiwan's first gold of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Su Po-ya (蘇柏亞) won a silver medal in the women's -53 kg event, while Chen Yu-chuang (陳宥庒) bagged a bronze in the women's -57kg event, and Ma Ting-hsia (馬婷霞) also took away a bronze in the women's -73kg event.

The Asian Taekwondo Championships is held every two years by the Asian Taekwondo Union. The 24th edition of the tournament was scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is being held in Beirut, Lebanon, June 16-18.

Before the start of the Asian Championships, Taiwanese taekwondo athletes had already secured four berths in the Tokyo Olympics, after scoring victories at the Asian Qualification Tournament in Jordan in late May and undergoing three weeks of training in Uzbekistan, according to the team's head coach Liu Tsu-yin (劉祖蔭).
