Taipei, June 19 (CNA) Taiwan on Saturday reported 128 new cases of COVID-19, as well as 20 deaths, marking a full week in which the daily number of infections remained below 200, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

At a press briefing, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said the recent daily case numbers have been relatively stable, and fewer administrative regions have been reporting infections, dropping to only seven on Saturday.

"Deaths are still high, mainly due to the large number of infections when the outbreak peaked" several weeks ago, said Chen, who also heads the CECC. "We hope to see a steady decrease in the number of deaths from next week."

All but one of the 128 new cases on Saturday were domestically transmitted.

New Taipei accounted for the majority of cases, with 81, followed by Taipei with 30, Taoyuan with eight, and Hsinchu County with three.

Hsinchu City and Keelung each reported two cases, while Taichung reported one, the CECC said.

Of the 16 cases outside New Taipei and Taipei, only four had unknown sources of infection, the CECC said.

The one imported case was that of a Taiwanese boy who returned from India earlier this month and tested positive at the end of his mandatory 14-day quarantine period, the CECC said.

Meanwhile, the 20 deaths reported Saturday were 10 men and 10 women, in their 50s to 90s, who passed away between June 10 and June 16, according to the CECC.

The new cases bring the total number in Taiwan to 13,896, of which over 12,500 have been domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 new cases in a single day.

The number of deaths in Taiwan from COVID-19 has now risen to 538, with all except 12 having occurred in the past month, according to CECC data.

The data showed that 531 deaths were from locally transmitted infections, and 90 percent of the fatalities were in New Taipei and Taipei.
