Taipei, July 4 (CNA) Second Baoshan Reservoir, which supplies water to the Hsinchu Science Park, reached full capacity Sunday morning for the first time since June 22, 2020, according to the Water Resources Agency (WRA).
Earlier this year, the water level was extremely low at Baoshan Reservoir and Second Baoshan Reservoir in Hsinchu, as no typhoons made landfall in Taiwan last year, bringing much less rain in the second half of the year. The situation was exacerbated by less spring rain than usual and the later than usual start of the plum rain season this year, the WRA said.
In early 2021, Second Baoshan Reservoir contained 10.31 million cubic meters of water but the water level fell precipitously, hitting a record low of 822,000 cubic meters, or 2.6 percent of full capacity, at 2 p.m. on May 30.
However, the arrival of a plum rain front on May 30 brought significant rainfall to the reservoir over the next several days, allowing the Ministry of Economic Affairs to stop water rationing measures on June 30, according to the WRA.
From May 30 - June 30, the water level at the reservoir rose from nearly empty to almost full capacity thanks to the heavy rain brought by the weather front, the WRA said.
