Taipei, July 5 (CNA) The Kaohsiung service station of Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA) has been encouraging migrant workers in the city, including those without valid working documents, to get tested for COVID-19 to avoid getting the disease and having it spread to local migrant communities.

In a statement issued on Monday, the station said inspections have been carried out around areas where migrant workers normally gather, and NIA staff have coordinated with over 105 labor brokers to locate migrants and encourage them to come out and get tested for COVID-19.

Some 16,500 legal migrant workers of various industrial parks and districts have so far tested negative for the disease, it said.

As part of this preventive measure, the Kaohsiung station is also encouraging unlicensed migrant workers to get tested and to seek treatment, especially those who show symptoms of COVID-19.

It assured migrants that those who come out and get tested will not be punished or deported.

So far, only 50 to 60 people have come forth voluntarily, the station said.
